Life in the 21st century has become more challenging than ever before. Many times, these challenges take their toll on our marital relationship, as well. Therefore, it is important to consciously work on the relationship and even seek expert advice or professional counseling if necessary.

You and your spouse may feel some kind of distance or tension building in the relationship. It is important to first search within yourself and determine whether you both have the same need to work things out and restore the relationship to its original level of intimacy and love. If the basic willingness is there from both sides, it is possible to improve the bond with some conscious effort from both partners.

Communication: The lack of communication is one of the most common factors that creates coldness or distance in a relationship. If you seek any marriage expert's advice, the first thing they will tell you is to improve your communication with each other. Spend sufficient time with your spouse and talk about your feelings openly. Pay attention to what your partner says and try to empathize with it.

Transparency: As far as possible, do not hide anything from your spouse. Do not think whether your partner will like or dislike something. Hiding things can cause far worse resentment in the long run than a temporary disapproval of something if you let your spouse know about it frankly.

Trust building: In marital relationships, more than any other relationship, trust is the key foundation on which the entire marital structure is built. There has to be absolute trust from both sides to make the relationship grow and mature. This trust must develop mutually and on its own. No expert advice can help to bring about trust; it must happen naturally between the two partners.

Spending exclusive time: It is imperative for the husband and wife to take time off from work and family, and spend totally exclusive time with each other as often as possible. This helps the relationship to repair and rejuvenate. This could mean celebrating a day or an evening exclusively with each other, without friends or family. Or, it could be a small, private vacation away from home, just with each other, once or twice a year.

Sense of humor: One of the most crucial things that often gets ignored in marital relationships is the jovial or lighter side. It is important to laugh with each other, play together or engage in some hobbies or interests that are common to both partners. Having fun is the most important part of the relationship. Most marital problems originate out of boredom or monotony, and then start mutating into more serious troubles. Therefore, it is critical to keep the relationship fresh, exciting and joyous.

If you can follow these five mantras of a happy marital relationship, you may not need any further expert advice or counseling on making your marriage work or improving the marital bond.
